Nicki Henry and Birdies Fore ALS
My name is Nicki Henry and I LOVE to golf. I truly love all aspects of the game and it has taught me some of my largest life lessons. I would rather be on the golf course than anywhere else, but my mother said I have to go to school; therefore, school is first on my list of priorities and golf is second.
In March, 2008 I read an article in Golf for Women magazine about the LPGA tournament player, Cristie Kerr and her “Birdies for Breast Cancer” foundation. Kerr counts her birdies and donates a specific amount for each, to finding the cure for breast cancer. I was immediately inspired and started my own birdies program to donate to Kerr’s foundation. I approached my family and friends to ask for their sponsorship, and in total I made 37 birdies for my 2008 golf season and was able to donate over $1,000 to her foundation.
In February, 2009 my grandmother, Carol Dovishaw, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS is an incurable, fatal, neuromuscular disease. The cause of ALS remains unclear and no cure exists. When I found out about my grandma’s diagnosis I knew I wanted to make finding the cure to ALS my permanent birdie charity.
I’m now working with the Bright Side Foundation which assists in funding research for The Cleveland Clinic. All proceeds I earn from my 2009, Birdies Fore ALS, will go directly to The Cleveland Clinic, my Grandma Carol’s hospital.
Your donation may not be able to help my grandmother, but we can make a difference and help others. This fatal disease needs to be stopped, so I ask for your support.
Please consider making a one time donation or a per birdie donation. Click here to learn more and contribute to my mission!
My season will conclude at the Ohio State High School Golf Tournament on October 23 – 24. YES, I WILL be at States this year!
Dear Nicki,
Just sitting here watching channel 5 news and saw your Student of the Week award, congratulations! Also watching with me is my wife Maura. She was diagnosed with ALS in November of 2007. Maura is also a regular visitor to the Cleveland Clinic So I want to contribute to your “Birdies Fore ALS” foundation. Please put us down for $10. for each of your competitive birdies for the remainder of the 2009 school season. And go for the pin, don’t play safe. Thank you and God Bless you. Our prayers are with you and your grandma.
Best of Luck,
Ed Schenck and Maura Agler
Dear Nicki,
I just read your full story on the Bright Side website and have realized that your Mother is a friend of mine!
I went to high school in Erie, and college at Dayton with her! Back in the day I have also been to some fun parties at your Grandmother’s house! She was always so beautiful, fun and nice to me during my years at Villa and Dayton with Sue.
My husband and I are also fortunate enough to know Barry. I just want you to know that you raising money this way is a wonderful way to honor your Grandmother. I am sure your parents and family are so proud of not only your golf accomplishments, but also of
your drive for giving back. So good luck with the rest of your season and your journey to states!
Sincerely,
Katy Hines
PS- Say hello to your Mom for me!
