It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that Bright Side of the Road founding member Bob Winovich passed away peacefully in his sleep on early Sunday morning, July 18th.

Since his brother Barry’s diagnosis with ALS five years ago, Bob has dedicated himself selflessly to raising funds for ALS research. As one of the Bright Side of the Road Foundation’s founding members, Bob has been instrumental in raising over one million dollars in funding while spreading the Bright Side message across the United States.

From a personal standpoint, we cannot express how deeply we feel the loss of this special man. Bob has always been a positive and uplifting presence in his hometown. His bald head, blue eyes, smile and positive vibrations were felt by all that knew him

Visitation will be held at Stroud-Lawrence Funeral Home in Chagrin Falls on Thursday, July 22nd, from 1pm-3pm and 5pm-8pm.

Bob will be buried next to his daughter Hannah at Evergreen Cemetery on Friday, July 23rd, following a 12:30 service at Holy Angels in Bainbridge, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, your donations to the Bob Winovich Memorial Fund are very appreciated and will be appropriately used for family expenses. Find out more the fund and Bob’s life of smiles at:

http://www.bobwinovich.com

Thank you for your continued friendship, thoughts and support.

When you get up in the morning and you see that crazy sun,
Keep me in your heart for a while.
-Warren Zevon

AJ Melaragno’s 5th Annual Memorial Scramble, held on Saturday May 22nd at the beautiful Willow Crest Golf Course in Oakbrook, IL, raised $48,500 to support ALS research.

Event organizer AJ Melaragno was proud of his golfers that more than doubled last year’s record fund-raising event (which raised over $22,000 for ALS research). Golfers were able to play in the scramble event while raising funds using various online tools supplied by Bright Side of the Road Foundation.

Event founder A.J. Melaragno explained his mission. “My good friend Barry Winovich was diagnosed with ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in March 2006,” he said. “But Barry will never give up. I’ve looked into his eyes and seen a passion to beat this disease. It’s my goal to use my Memorial Scramble to raise substantial funding for ALS research.”

A big Bright Side “Thank You” to all of our corporate sponsors who also helped to make this event possible.

After an old friend was diagnosed with ALS, A.J. Melaragno decided to utilize his annual Chicago golf scramble event to raise funding for ALS research.

AJ added that he plans on beating the record fund-raising of last year’s event which raised over $22,000 for ALS research.

The Memorial Scramble will be held on Saturday, May 22nd at Willow Crest Golf Club in Chicago.

Golfers can play in the scramble event while raising funds using various online tools supplied by Bright Side of the Road Foundation including donation web pages and email support.

If you’re interested in participating in the event, or sponsoring a hole, please visit the 5th Annual Memorial Scramble for ALS website.

I’m a firm believer that we can accomplish any goal we set our
minds to—no matter how big.

In 2004, with little outdoor experience but much determination, I hiked
the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. I met a number of
amazing people and learned a lot about myself along the way. It was the
trip of a lifetime for me and a great accomplishment.

However, I was mentally and physically exhausted as hiking over 2,000
miles carrying my home on my back can take its toll.

Little did I know that as time went on, my memory of the bad times
during the trip—pain, fear, exhaustion—had become dampened. All of the
wonderful views, people and triumphs along the way have stayed fresh in
my memory. I didn’t understand it when I met others on the trail who
were hiking it for the second or third time until now. As difficult as
it was, I fell in love with long distance hiking.

The Pacific Crest Trail starts in California at the Mexican
Border and runs over 2,600 miles through the U.S. and crosses into
Canada. Armed with a little more knowledge and experience this time,
I’m planning another thru-hike. Although walking from Mexico to Canada
should be enough of a feat, I knew I wanted it to be something more…

CLICK TO SUPPORT MEGAN ON HER HIKE!

My goals this time around are two-fold:

1. Make it to Canada on foot and

2. Help to raise money and awareness to promote better
prevention, treatment and a cure for ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Please help me support my friend Barry Winovich and others like him to
find a cure for ALS. Everyone has the ability to make a difference in
some way and every dollar helps.

I know that Barry will be an inspiration to me during the tougher times
along the way for his ability to stay positive despite the struggles he
faces. He’s kept his sense of humor and upbeat attitude despite not
being able to take care of the simplest of things we take for granted
like being able to hold a cup to take a drink.

I’ll be grateful for every step I take, especially if it may
help others to have a better quality of life. I promise to do
everything I can to keep walking to help support this cause and invite
you join me along the way through my journal in the hopes you’ll give
your support with a financial contribution to Bright Side of the Road.
